Terms

Description

Anal Cancer This is a form of skin cancer which grows in or just close to the anus
   
Anal Fissure An anal fissure is a small tear or spilt in the skin lining the anal canal which causes severe pain and bleeding from the back passage
   
Botulinum toxin This is an injection of a toxin which paralyses muscle contractions.  It is used in cosmetic surgery as well as the colorectal treatment of anal fissure.
   
Colonoscopy This is an investigation or test to look at the lining of the whole colon.  It is used to look for inflammation or polyps or cancers.  It also allows tissue or biopsies to be taken for further analysis.
   
Crohns Disease This is an inflammatory bowel disorder which can occur from mouth to anus, but most commonly affects the terminal ileum.  Medical and surgical treatments are often required.
   
Haemorrhoidectomy An operation to remove haemorrhoids
   
Perianal haematoma This is a very painful condition characterised by a blood blister type problem very close to the anus.  Is often confused with true heamorrhoids or called an external pile.
   
Polyps These are small wart like grows on the lining of the bowel.  They are important because they can go on to form bowel cancer.
   
Pruritus ani This condition is best described as an "Itchy bottom".  Patient gets irritated and inflammed skin around the anus which cause an intense desire to scratch the area.
   
Rectal Prolapse Rectal prolapse is a condition in which the rectum (the lower end of the colon, located just above the anus) turns itself inside out.  The bowel protrudes form the anal canal after defeacation in severe cases stays out permanently
   
Rubber Band Ligation   A treatment for haemorrhoids which is usually carried out in a clinic setting.  Small band are applied above the haemorrhoids to promote the shrinking of the heamorrhoids.
   
Ulcerative Colitis This an inflammatory bowel disorder which exclusively affects the colon.  Surgery is reserved for those patients who fail to respond to medical management.
